Introduction:
In this post I will be discussing and learning what it is like to work in a public relations agency, since it could be somewhere I could end up in my future endeavors. I want to go over the pros and cons of what it is like to work in an agency. I am currently in a student-run agency at Quinnipiac University, and it has really piqued my interest in that career. Within the student-run agency I am currently in, I am on the graphic design team. I love how it combines my love of design and public relations.
Pros and Cons:
According to Tressa Robbins (2023), in an article where she explains her personal experience within an agency, she explains some of the pros and cons that she found while working in an agency. Some of the pros include diverse experience, a fast-paced environment, networking opportunities, skill development, team collaboration, professional growth, and visibility. To me, these seem like all great skills to learn from a job while also keeping the job interesting.
“According to The Agency Edge Research Series by Agency Management Institute, AudienceAudit, and Dynata, 41% of agency employees have worked client side before, and a supermajority of those employees prefer agency work. This is because of their ability to be more creative and complete different tasks every day. Agency employees also love their work so much that 86% of them recommend agency work overall, while 50% of them highly recommend agency work to their friends and family” (Chamley 2023). This quote really opened my eyes to how much people really like working in an agency because of the cons I have read about agencies and the work-life balance issue.
Robbins then continues to describe some of the cons or setbacks that she found from working in an agency. These include long hours, stressful environments, client demands, managing multiple clients, revenue pressure, and job insecurity. It is definitely interesting to read about the struggles that this individual faced but it’s nothing that I haven’t heard before while talking to my professors or friends. I also think being in an agency is something that one must try out for oneself to truly learn if it is right for them since it does depend so much on if you can keep up with the workload and if the fast-paced interests you.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, it was interesting to read about people's experiences in an agency. Through this research, I've gained valuable insights into the pros and cons. I would say that the pros and cons could cancel each other out because the pros are really good but then the cons are a bit harsh if it ends up not being a good fit. My involvement in a student-run agency at Quinnipiac University has given me a small insight into what it is really like to work in an agency. Armed with a more well-rounded understanding of life in an agency, I feel more prepared to look into this field in my future endeavors.
